Sahjeevan is established in the mid-nineties to work with communities where the abundance of ecosystems they inhabit and their traditional knowledge, drive solutions.Sahjeevan has worked on developing domestic water solutions based on the geo-hydrology of the villages; has increased dryland agriculture productivity by conserving the crop seed varieties; improved the economic conditions of pastoralists and highlighted their science, values and economic contribution to the nation; encouraged panchayats and communities to conserve the endangered biodiversity of their villages and developed urban waste solutions.

Its work has been primarily in the region of Kutch in Gujarat. Its strategies have focused on studying the livelihood-environmental knowledge linkages, organising communities to develop solutions and advocacy with the governments to develop policy and take these solutions to scale.

Sahjeevan believes small but networked organisations are more efficient and humane than large ones; so has contributed to developing a loose network of over 14 NGO’s and CBO’s in Kutch; they work collectively bringing complementary strengths to the agendas.

Over the past two years Sahjeevan has reorganised itself to primarily strengthen its work on pastoralism and biodiversity conservation. Its operations are being expanded beyond Kutch to work with pastoralists across the country. Sahjeevan has begun taking its strategies developed in Kutch to organise pastoralists in other parts of Gujarat. It has also established the Centre for Pastoralism (CfP)to support governments and NGO’s working with pastoralists in the country. Both Sahjeevan’s operations in Gujarat and CfPare run by two independent Directors who coordinate their efforts closely.

Sahjeevan invites applications for a full time Director for its operations in Gujarat. Remuneration will be based on the qualification and experience of the applicants. The role and responsibilities of the Director would include –

Qualification and Experience

Masters or equivalent degree diploma in Social Science / Animal Husbandry / Environmental Sciences / Livestock sector / Biodiversity Conservation / Natural Resource Management.

Minimum 10 to 15 years of experience in organizing communities in the context of interventions related to Pastoralism, Biodiversity conservation or Natural Resource Management.

Expected to have a strong belief in Conservation.

Program Leadership

The Director would ensure that each of the programs are led by qualified anchors, and are adequately steered in their respective roles and activities.

  • Build and guide the team, to strengthen the pastoral organisations (CBO’s) in Kutch and facilitate such that they build their value chains from conserving their ecosystems to markets.
  • Build and guide a team to expand the work with other pastoral communities in Gujarat.
  • Develop the work on biodiversityto develop a model of participatory conservation.

The Director will be expected to have a strong belief in conservation and have expertise in a related area of pastoralism or biodiversity conservation.

Capacity Building

Lead and motivate the team by creating a nurturing organizational environment and the space for strengthening abilities and capacities of the Sahjeevan team. This would involve identifying learning opportunities for the staff, ensuring participatory review processes, partnering training institutions and ensuring finances for the same.


Establishing local, regional, national and international linkages/partnerships/collaborations with related institutions, Government departments, technical research and academicinstitutions, cultural centers, as well as external professionals in the field of animal sciences, ecology, marketing, community development and technologies related to specific programs.

Organizational Management and Governance

  • Providing leadership to the organization to achieve its objectives through developing strategic plans, envisaging long term and short term interventions.
  • Report to the assigned reporting authority, the Governing Board, take direction and implement board decisions.
  • Fund-raising, proposal development, program strategies.
  • Represent the organization with all its stakeholders in the external environment.
  • Team building, leadership development within organization.
  • Oversee financial monitoring, Annual budgeting of organization.
  • Developing partnerships with resource organization, in keeping with the needs of the organization
  • Oversee staff contract and implementation of staff service regulation of the organization
  • Oversee publication of Annual Reports; ensure timely submission of donor reports.
  • Coordinate with the Center for Pastoralism and consolidate efforts, finance and administration.
